A Perfect Half-Day in Cascais (Easy Day Trip from Lisbon)

Sometimes the best travel moments aren’t planned. That’s exactly how we ended up in Cascais, on a whim, with just half a day to explore. And somehow, it turned into one of our favorite experiences near Lisbon.

How to Get to Cascais (Fast & Easy)

One of the best things about Cascais is how easy it is to reach.

A quick train ride from Cais do Sodré Station gets you there in about 40 minutes, and it’s one of the most scenic routes along the coast.

Even better? The station in Cascais is just a 3-minute walk to the beach, restaurants, and the main square.

👉 Planning tip: If you prefer something more structured, you can also book a guided day trip (great if you want to combine Cascais with Sintra without the stress of planning). You can also book a private tour from Cascais that will take you to all the places mentioned below!

Best Tours to Cascais (Easy & Stress-Free)

If you’d rather not plan everything yourself or want to see more in one day, booking a tour is one of the easiest ways to experience Cascais.

The Perfect Half-Day Itinerary in Cascais

We came in by car, so we started up by the Boca do Inferno on the waterfront, and then walked toward town along the coast. It was a great way to see the edge of the city and end up by the marina for lunch.

If you are coming in on the train, walk through the square and check out the shops and restaurants. You can make your way up towards the Boca do Inferno after lunch if you feel like you need some exercise. Or you can lounge by the sea on the beach.

A Hidden Gem Most People Miss in Cascais: Museu Condes de Castro Guimarães

All these places are marked on this Google Map. You can also download maps and walking tours with GPSmyCity.

The gardens at the Museu Condes de Castro Guimarães were one of the most peaceful parts of our visit. We enjoyed the shady paths, ocean views, tiled fountains, and peacocks and chickens wandering around. We stopped at the park cafe to have a drink and enjoy the sunshine.

Good to know: The museum is closed on Mondays, but the gardens are still worth visiting.

Don’t Skip This Historic Spot

The Cidadela de Cascais is more than just a fortress; it’s now a cultural space with galleries, restaurants, and incredible views.

If you have time, plan to explore inside or grab a drink here. It’s one of the most unique spots in town.

Where to Eat: Seafood with a View

You can’t visit Cascais without eating seafood by the water.

Seafood Platter for two at Baía do Peixe

We had an incredible meal at Baía do Peixe with fresh shellfish, ocean views, and that perfect laid-back coastal atmosphere.

Recommendation: Sit outside and order a seafood platter to share. It’s one of the best experiences in Cascais.

The Best Thing to Do in Cascais (It’s Free)

After lunch, just walk.

The waterfront is where Cascais really shines with its coastal views, small shops, cafés, and that relaxed seaside energy.

This area is also on your way back to the train station, making it the perfect way to end your visit.

A Bit of History (That Makes It Even Better)

Cascais became a popular seaside escape in the 1800s when Luís I of Portugal made it the royal family’s summer residence.

His son, Carlos I of Portugal, continued the tradition, helping shape the elegant coastal town you see today.

Should You Stay Overnight?

We only had a few hours, and it was enough to fall in love with Cascais.

But if we went back, we’d absolutely stay a night or two.

By the marina on the way to the beach

👉 Why stay?

  • Fewer crowds in the evening
  • Beautiful sunsets along the coast
  • Easy access to nearby beaches like Guincho

Final Thoughts: Is Cascais Worth It?

Cascais is perfect if you’re looking for:

  • A quick, easy day trip from Lisbon
  • Coastal views without heavy crowds
  • Incredible seafood and relaxed vibes

Sometimes, the unplanned stops end up being the most memorable.

And Cascais was exactly that for us.
